Smarties Cookies

Forget the mixer, everyone should make cookie dough by hand. It's more fun and you get a bit of a 'workout' HA! to help burn off all those cookies you end up eating.

I had a hard time incorporating all the flour in so I ended up using my hands, which gets kinda messy, but at least that's more cookie dough for me to snack on.

I flatten my cookies so they actually spread.

10 minutes later... I may have underbaked these a little too much because they were really soft and kind of reminded me of snacking on sugar cookie dough. I love cookie dough when it's completely raw, but the in between raw and cooked texture of grosses me out a little.

I wanted these to be more sugar cookie like than chocolate chip cookie like so I adapted a snickerdoodles recipe from CI. I thought that increasing the butter while decreasing the flour would make these chewier, but they ended up even softer and cakier than the regular snickerdoodles. Does anyone have a crispy edges, but chewy center sugar cookie recipe recommendation?

Smarties cookies
Based on CI's Snickerdoodle recipe
2 3/4 cup flour
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
12 tbsp butter
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 335 F
Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt
Cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time and mix until incorporated
Add vanilla.
Add flour mixture to butter mixture and mix until the flour disappears
Portion dough using a medium cookie scoop ~ 1.5 tbsp and place on prepared cookie sheet three inches apart.
Flatten the dough slightly and press smarties into the dough
Bake for 10-12 minutes until the cookies are very lightly colored around the edges, the tops have cracked and the cookies have puffed and started to deflate
Cool cookies for 5 minutes and then transfer to a rack.

For rolled out sugar cookies I use this recipe from King Arthur. But I use vanilla instead of the fancy flavoring they call for.

  4. Those look wicked good, although I thought you meant these kinds of Smarties. Heh.

If you want crispier cookies, I think using one whole egg and one yolk would do it. Plus the browns sugar content changes things, but I couldn't tell you exactly how.

  18. hey,
your smartie cookies look really cute! If you want a chewier cookie with a crispy edge then I think you need to have a high sugar to fat ratio and use a mixture of both brown and white sugars. I'm not sure exactly what 'sugar cookies'- is this an american term for something we have in the UK? Anyway, feel free to message me back if you would like a recipe as I have quite a good one!

  22. Yumm smarties are so much better than M&M's. Though in cookies I really prefer M&M's for some reason. Do you have the Martha Stewart Baking Handbook? I like the sugar cookie recipe in there though if you bake them too long they end up crisp (bake a little less and the centers are chewy and the edges crispy). Let me know if you want me to send you the recipe!

  27. This is my favourite snickerdoodle recipe. I've tried a few, some with Cream of Tartar, some with baking powder but this one is something different. It uses cornstarch and baking soda. This recipe really makes great Snickerdoodles.

It's from Simply Recipes by guest blogger and pastry extraordinaire, Shuna Fish Lydon. I like it because it doesn't contain Cream of Tartar like traditional recipes and therefore doesn't have that tart aftertaste.

I love my Snickerdoodles flat and crisp more than puffy. This dough spreads more than other doughs. I actually do something weird where I take them out briefly mid-bake and squash them down with a fork even further for the crispiest cookie ever. It's just my preference.

It's a small batch recipe so be ready to double or triple, perhaps even quadruple- you'll never have enough with the original recipe as these are so good. Not the fanciest-looking cookie in the world but the combination of butter and cinnamon makes them my favourite.

We never had them in Australia where I grew up and I only read about them online recently where their name fascinated me and I just knew I had to try making them myself.
